There are several benefits to bicycling to work, which is why employers should be encouraging their employees to bike. First, not only is bicycling to work a good form of exercise, but it’s also great for mental health. Studies have found that employees who bike to work have more energy throughout the day and are even found to have less stress. They also save money by not having to drive or take public transit to work.

Aside from personal benefits, biking to work is also great for the environment. By biking to work you can reduce the number of harmful pollutants and lower your carbon footprint. Plus (and this is especially true if your business is in the city), there may be a lack of car parking, or lots of traffic to contend with. With cities adapting their infrastructure to include bike lanes, it’s become much more convenient to bike to work.

What can employers do to encourage their employees to bike to work?

• Provide safe and durable bike parking solutions. If you have the space, create a bike room that is both safe from theft and the outdoor elements, like this bike parking room at SickKids Hospital in Toronto.

• If you do not have the indoor space for bike parking, consider an outdoor bike shelter with bike racks, like the Barrie Public Library.

• Employers could also consider adding a bike repair station to allow employees to perform light maintenance on their bikes to ensure they are always in great shape to ride to work.

Some other ways in which employers can encourage their employees to bike to work include providing a casual office environment to help employees feel comfortable arriving to work in their bike attire. Employers may even consider adding a shower for employees to use (especially in the warmer months!).
